Davin's surgery

About a month ago Davin woke up at 11:30 pm, screaming. When I checked on him it sounded like he may need a diaper change, so I changed his diaper, but everything looked fine. No poop, no rash. Yet he was still screaming. I asked him if his bottom hurt and he said "YEEEES!" I couldn't figure it out until I started to put a diaper back on him. As I went to affix the sticky tab I finally noticed a huge lump about the size of an egg in his groin area. Of course my first words were, "DAAAAAAAVE! Get in here!"

I figured out it was probably a hernia and called his doctor, who said to take him to the ER to make sure it wasn't strangulated. Every little movement was bringing screams of pain from Davin, and it was so sad. After a mere hour in the ER (hallelujah! It was awesome!) and Davin being grumpy and snappy to everyone who came into the room, the doctor applied a little pressure and the hernia popped right back in. Suddenly Davin was all smiles and waving at everyone and wanting snacks.

We went to visit a specialist and scheduled his operation. The day before I was so nervous and trying to think of every possible excuse to back out. I hated the thought of a general anethesia for a little guy and knew there could be complications from that, and the thought of passing him over to the doctors and them taking him away nearly killed me.

How cute are those pjs?

We got to the hospital about 7:45 am on April 9, and they quickly got everything arranged and gave Davin a dose of Niacin or something like that, to help "relax" him and help him not remember anything. Soon his head started drooping off the pillow and he was acting a little drunk and definitely relaxed! Dave was like, "So, how do we get more of that?" but the anethesiologist wasn't willing to spare us any for those temper-tantrum or won't-go-to-bed moments -- darn him.

Feelin' good!

Then they put a little hospital hat on him, loaded him into a little wagon and wheeled him away saying "Weeeee!" No tears, no trauma, no dramatically ripping him from my unwilling arms. Just "weeee!"

We waited for about 40 minutes, then they called us back into post-op and wheeled sleeping Davin into us! They woke him up and he wanted me to hold him, then went back to sleep. It was very sweet. He was in and out for the next hour until they let us go, then came to once we got in the car.

Within a few hours he was running around and back to his normal self, no problems! And he's been totally fine since then, except he pokes at his belly button where they put a scope to see if he had a hernia on the other side as well (he didn't). That seems to bother him the most. He says, "Owie. Doctor fix it," in his baby accent. I'm like, honey, doctor did it! But everything was nice and smooth ... and I'm glad it's over!
