Learning Logs: Week 21

We had a great time at the student entrepreneur event this week! Those kids were great and inspiring. Everyone is working on business plans in our house. We also had a fun day today, as it was "reading day" - the first Monday of every month, we drop our other school work and read all day. We read 9 different picture books about cowboys, 3 chapters of "Gifted Hands" and then everyone did their own independent reading. Everyone also got a new book.

Caden - Well, I did a few math placement tests and found out I'm ready for pre-algebra! That was cool. My new books should arrive tomorrow. In the meantime I keep working my way through Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe and I think that's really advanced me in math and the way I look at things. I've been doing my spelling lessons and like the word "multicultural." I am reading Wingfeather and really like it, along with a few other books. In my photoshop class I took a picture of a Blue Man and turned him green! I gave him some really good effects like gloss, and it looks awesome. I am also doing a JavaScript game coding class at my co-op and it's going really well! In history we're talking about the "westward expansion" and moving into learning about the founding fathers. We are also studying the constitution because we're going to be in a constitution bee in a few months. Piano is good, I'm working on scales and changing keys.

Tessa - So I am doing division again and reviewing the other concepts I've learned this year. I did my spelling this week and am reading Little House in the Big Woods and I finished . I got the new Mr Lemoncello book today and can't wait to start reading it! I love those books! For history we are watching videos that teach us about the constitution and we'll be doing a constitution bee later where we could win a few hundred dollars if we do the best! I want to win! We also had a piano competition this month that had to do with practicing, and I hope I win one of those prizes as well; they are good ones! I went to the entrepreneurship fair and loved it! Those kids were amazing! I want a doll bed and we loved bringing home balloons for our little brothers.

Davin - In math I learned this week how to borrow when there is a zero, like 405-369. I can do it pretty well now. I'm reading Gifted Hands for one of my co-op classes and I'm writing a story on the computer that is pretty funny. Here is the beginning:
"A long time ago in a land Far away. no that’s No way to start a book! Lets Try something different. in the short hills there was a prince. He’s poor.  His name is Prince so he didn’t feel sad or different. but something else he didn’t know was that this was all about to change."
In history we're learning about the constitution and talking about how Americans moved out of Jamestown. In science we did snowflake art and again talked about how snow is made and each flake is different, because we got a lot of snow this week! I've been shoveling like mad! I also learned about the Candy Bomber in my airplanes class and that was cool, how they figured out how to slow down the trajectory of the candy from the plane so kids wouldn't get injured by the fast-moving chocolate! In piano we're learning Star Wars and I taught myself the Darth Vader march song. And then I didn't really do anything for tech this week unless you count playing Star Wars on the iPad.

Koen - I did my reading lessons with my mom this week and read some words in one of our cowboy stories. I got my own DuoLingo account and can read some of those things. For math we did some play do parts where we talked about a whole, a half, a quarter, and an eighth. Then we made cupcakes and I had to use like 2 quarter cups to make a half cup and stuff. That was really fun and a little hard. So I don't really do the constitution lessons because I'm too young for the contest and it's hard but I take a class called simple machines in co-op and we talked about levers. I also do a math class there and we talked about telling time and we had a giant clock on the floor and 2 people had to lay down and make up the time that the teacher called out. It was fun!
